Ruth Steen, 91, of rural Williston, North Dakota, passed away Saturday morning, September 8, 2018 at her daughter’s home in rural Williston.
Ruth Opal Greenup Steen was born on February 27, 1927 to Harlan and Lillian (Walters) Greenup on a farm near Alexander, ND. Later, she moved with her family to live in Williston ND.
After high school, Ruth was united in marriage to Dean Lawrence Steen and eventually became the mother of seven sons, Dean Anthony, Little Larry, Lee (Bonnie), Dean Jr. (Cathy), David (Renae), Larry (Jackie), Duane (Susan), and seven daughters, Dea, Beverly (Perry), Linda (Dan), Bonny, Marvelle (Bob), Barbara, and Lorraine (Allan).
Ruth’s greatest joys in life were being a mother and grandmother. Sharing her love for Jesus was demonstrated by everything, from her “Jesus loves you” phone greeting to her warm welcome for anyone who walked through her door. Whether visitors knew her as Ruth, Mom, or just plain Ma, they would find a quiet sanctuary in her home and an attentive caring listener in her. No matter what time of the day or night, visitors were warmly greeted. Ruth never lost her enthusiasm for life and firmly believed that all things are possible through Jesus.
There was a love for chickens that drove her to raise them on the farm for meat and eggs. She loved the new arrival of day old chicks and attending to their needs. People loved to buy farm grown chickens from her, many complimenting on the wonderful taste. She loved being an entrepreneur working for herself and receiving gratification in knowing she provided what people wanted in poultry product.
Those who preceded her in death were her parents; siblings; husband; three sons; grandchildren; great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren have welcomed her home with open arms.
At 91 years old she lived a full life, loving God and fighting for any injustice and praying against any immoral acts in this world. She comforted any in need or distress as she could with words and love of our Lord and savior Jesus. Ruth lived a life with some hardship and conflict but all was overcome by the love and Holy Spirit sent by Jesus and the promises he made for a better life in heaven. She exemplified the true meaning of love that we all are to have for our fellowman giving the grace of God to each other forgiving one another and humbling ourselves. to the saving grace Jesus so beautifully blessed us with. This blessing from God, our mother and grandmother is survived by eleven children; 103 grandchildren, 152 greatgrandchildren, and 23 great-great-grandchildren. We shall miss her wisdom her guidance and most of all the tangible love she so freely gave to us all.
